Highlights

Social protection assumes a pivotal role within the current socio-economic landscape of Sri Lanka, which continues to experience the tremors of an unprecedented economic crisis, widely regarded as the most severe in the nation's history. In an environment marked by an only slowly recovering economy and widespread multidimensional vulnerabilities, the imperative for a robust social protection system has never been stronger.

In addition to being a human right, access to comprehensive and adequate social protection for all is an important investment in human capabilities and a prerequisite for inclusive recovery and growth. Social protection prevents and reduces poverty and vulnerabilities and ensures that no one is left behind. It also contributes to improved health and education outcomes, which in turn increase the quality and productivity of the workforce. Furthermore, well designed social protection systems can promote gender equality and the inclusion of people with disabilities.

These materials, available in English, Sinhala, and Tamil, provide an introduction to social protection. They explain why social protection matters to all of us and what social protection means in practice.
