UNICEF concerned with the recent reports of violence against children in Sri Lanka and calls for more efforts to protect them
31st October 2022, Colombo- “UNICEF is deeply concerned with the recent reports of violence against children in Sri Lanka. Last week, the media reported the killing of a 10-year-old boy in a knife attack. Days later a child has allegedly been shot by a police officer causing serious injuries.
Nothing justifies any form of violence against a child. UNICEF condemns all acts of violence against children. The protection of children is the role of everyone—parents, society and state institutions. UNICEF is encouraged by the legal steps being taken and calls on government authorities to strengthen mechanisms to bring perpetrators of such crimes to justice and safeguard children.
The public can play a great role, including in reporting. Anyone who is aware of cases of violence against children is encouraged to contact 1929 helpline or the police.
UNICEF will continue to support the Government to ensure that children and adolescents are protected from violence, in accordance with the national legal and policy framework and UN Convention on the Rights of the Child”
