Niamey, May 8, 2025 – In partnership with the Government of Niger, UNICEF, the GAVI Alliance, and German Cooperation (BMZ) officially handed over 551 motorcycles to the Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene. This initiative aims to support national efforts to strengthen community health and routine immunization.
Valued at a total of 640 million CFA francs, this donation was made possible thanks to GAVI's ng funding of 500,194,000 CFA francs for 509 motorcycles through the RSS3 project[LO1] , and a contribution of 40,300,000 CFA francs from BMZ for an additional 42 motorcycles.
These equipments are intended to strengthen the primary healthcare delivery system by facilitating vaccine distribution, cold chain monitoring, mobile campaigns, and nutritional supplementation, particularly in remote rural areas.
“These motorcycles will enhance high-impact community health interventions, directly contributing to the reduction of infant, child, and maternal mortality,” stated the Minister of Health, Dr. Garba Hakimi.
In the same spirit, Dr. Souleymane Kanon, GAVI’s Senior Country Manager for Niger and the Central African Republic, emphasized, "The motorcycles provided will strengthen the logistical capacity of peripheral health facilities —both for advanced vaccination strategies and for any other community-based services requiring mobility .”
The German Cooperation also reaffirmed its strategic commitment highlighting the importance of primary healthcare for sustainable development, particularly in the Sahel region. “Germany remains fully committed to strengthening primary healthcare, which is a central pillar of our cooperation. UNICEF Representative Djanabou Mahondé emphasized: “This support goes far beyond logistics. It symbolizes a collective commitment to reach every child, every woman, and every family, even in the most remote areas.”
This logistical support reflects the coordinated and shared commitment of leading technical and financial partners to to build a more resilient, accessible, and equitable health system in Niger. It embodies the common resolve of the Government, UNICEF, GAVI, and BMZ to ensure health services reach the country’s most vulnerable communities
