Highlights

On September 10, 2023, Storm Daniel devastated north-eastern Libya, severely impacting the cities of Derna, Bayda, Marj, Shahat, Soussa, Benghazi, and Al-Marj. The disaster claimed over 5,800 lives, including children, and displaced around 44,800 people. Entire neighbourhoods were swept away, and critical health and education infrastructure suffered extensive damage.

With support from humanitarian and development partners, UNICEF's response to Storm Daniel began swiftly, delivering 91 tons of relief, health services to 280,000 women and children, and mental health support for 8,400. Clean water and WASH supplies reached 85,000 people, and education was restored for 8,600 children with learning materials provided. Nutritional aid supported 17,000 children and 19,000 mothers. In 2024, UNICEF continues improving water access, rehabilitating health facilities, restoring schools, and providing psychosocial support, recreational kits, and cash transfers to vulnerable families in Derna.
