Interview opportunity: UNICEF at the Geneva Pledging Conference for Yemen

21 February 2019

Who: Geert Cappelaere, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa

When  : 25 & 26 February 2019

Why: In Yemen today, countless children live in areas of active fighting either right on the frontline or in places witnessing heavy violence. With every passing day, the four-year long conflict, with its continued attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, is making a bad situation much worse.

The country has become a living hell for children with over 80 per cent of all children needing humanitarian assistance. Across the country, 2 million children under 5 years-old are acutely malnourished, including nearly 360,000 severely acutely malnourished children who are fighting for their lives.

The impact of the conflict runs deep and touches every single aspect of children’s lives. Yemen risks losing its youngest generation to a vicious cycle of violence, displacement, poverty and illiteracy.

The high-level pledging event for the humanitarian crisis in Yemen seeks to support emergency response and alleviate the suffering of the Yemeni people, especially children.
