FunDoo GREEN-Pal:
Expanding the FunDoo Ecosystem’s Reach into Climate Education and Action
Worldwide, youth are bearing the brunt of the impact of the climate crisis. By 2030, an estimated 175 million young people will face the severe effects of droughts, while a staggering 1.2 billion will be at risk of flooding due to climate change.
Recognizing the urgency of climate action, UNICEF has collaborated with the Association for Learning Design and Education for Sustainable Development (ALDESD), UNESCO, and the American University of Sharjah (AUS) to introduce the GREEN-Pal chatbot into the FunDoo ecosystem.
FunDoo is a digital life coach providing a bite-sized gamified curriculum equipping young people with 21st-century skills through real-world tasks. Designed for low bandwidth and mobile literacy, it leverages tech for education without deepening digital divides. Currently operating in 14 countries, FunDoo has reached more than 1 million adolescents.
Young people everywhere are ready to facilitate the transition to a low-emission, climate-resilient world. As the impacts intensify, young people are calling for the creation of innovative solutions that prioritize climate education and eco-friendly skills so that they are well-equipped to participate in and lead climate initiatives.
Developed through a participatory process with young people around the world, FunDoo GREEN-Pal aligns with the elements outlined under the Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE), which was adopted by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). By following experiential learning principles, users perform real tasks to reduce energy consumption, conserve water, and adopt eco-friendly practices in daily life.
With the addition of GREEN-Pal, young people will be equipped with the skills in ecological literacy, systems thinking and action competence to drive climate actions in their own communities. By nurturing these hard and soft skills through real-life actions, GREEN-Pal is set to help youth identify and address environmental issues in their communities, one task at a time.
