Collecting Drape
Enabling early detection and accurate diagnosis of post-partum hemorrhage, saving mothers’ lives.
Across the world, over 14 million women suffer from Post-Partum Hemorrhage (PPH), also known as excessive bleeding after birth. Every year, PPH leads to approximately 70,000 deaths, making it the leading cause of maternal mortality in low- and middle-income countries.
UNICEF is working to increase access to collecting drape, a product that effectively enables early detection of PPH through easy collection of blood lost after delivery and subsequent accurate estimation of blood loss levels. A user guidance will also be provided for appropriate use of the product.
Detection of PPH through collecting drape can prompt stabilization intervention, such as the Non-pneumatic Anti-shock Garment (NASG), and timely treatment, such as the Uterine Balloon Tamponade (UBT). Both innovative products are currently available for procurement via UNICEF’s supply catalogue. The full scaling of collecting drape fit-for-purpose will help contribute to the global goal of reducing maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100 000 live births.
