Dubai, UAE – 13 October 2021 – UNICEF and du, from Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC), today announced that a new partnership agreement to improve the protection of children online has been officially signed. The partnership will support national partners in increasing awareness, promoting behavioural change, and ensuring the availability of all required support services for children and parents in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and beyond.

With the rapid global expansion of mobile phones and other smart devices, children face new opportunities. Children with smart devices and internet connectivity are exposed to a world of educational resources and access to global information, as well as opportunities to learn digital skills, explore friendships, and develop new forms of self-expression.

“Emerging evidence suggests that internet access also exposes children to several risks including cyberbullying and online sexual abuse and exploitation,” said Ted Chaiban, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa. “This partnership is an example of expert organisations teaming up to provide innovative solutions.”

The three-year partnership will engage hundreds of thousands of children and caregivers to raise their awareness of online risks and provide them with knowledge and safety tips. UNICEF will develop platforms and materials against selected programmes that contain crucial information for children and their parents, with generous support from du on creative development and dissemination to millions of its customers, particularly parents and children in the UAE via SMS and emails.

“Contributing to the transformation of our communities is one of du’s most cherished principles,” added Fahad Al Hassawi, CEO, EITC. “In partnership with UNICEF, du aims to offer children protection and education, while supporting parents and guardians. With UNICEF, we look forward to making valuable contributions in both these areas so ensuring future and up-and-coming generations are safe and well-informed. This initiative aligns with du’s strategic approach to ensure the digital well-being of specific segments of the UAE community by supporting the next generation and backing their education and empowerment.

du will also support UNICEF’s promotions and campaigns during different occasions and milestones with its flagship stores across the UAE. To able to reach millions of du followers on social media platforms, UNICEF will be also present advocacy messages to audiences on du’s social media platforms.
