KOZANI, ATHENS, March 6, 2025-The University of Western Macedonia and UNICEF are collaborating to create the Child Rights Centre, an initiative that aims not only to promote and protect children's rights, but also to promote their social integration. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding marks the launch of a centre that will provide education, training and support to children and young people.
The Centre, in cooperation with the Regional Directorate of Education of Western Macedonia, will ensure the protection of children's rights with their full integration into the educational community and social life. At the same time, it will act as a bridge between the university community, the local community and child protection agencies, contributing to the development of sustainable social inclusion policies.
The Rector of the University of Western Macedonia, Professor Theodoros Theodoulides, said:
"The creation of the Child Rights Centre is an important initiative that strengthens the social role of our University. Through this partnership with UNICEF, we are committed to promoting research, fostering awareness and offering young people the opportunity to actively participate in shaping actions related to their rights. The education and protection of children is not only a subject of study, but a responsibility for all of us."
Vice Dean for International Relations, Outreach and Holistic Care, Professor Eleni Griva, noted: "The establishment of the Child Rights Centre is an important milestone in connecting the University of Western Macedonia with the local community. The project is fully aligned with our institution's vision and commitment to social awareness, extroversion and academic excellence. We hope that the Centre will become a hub for interdisciplinary research, education, training and advocacy for children's rights at local, regional and national levels."
UNICEF Representative in Greece, Dr. Ghassan Khalil, said:
"I am particularly pleased and congratulate the University of Western Macedonia for the establishment of the Child Rights Centre. With this initiative, the University joins a network of academic institutions in Greece and internationally, actively contributing to the promotion and strengthening of children's rights. UNICEF will work closely with the University, ensuring that every child enjoys his or her rights. The establishment of the Centre will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the lives of children and society as a whole."
The Child Rights Centre will undertake research and educational initiatives, implement awareness-raising activities and strengthen strategic partnerships. Therefore, by signing the Memorandum, the University of Western Macedonia and UNICEF are taking an important step towards a more just and inclusive world for every child.
