Athens, 1 April 2026 – The U-Talent initiative was successfully held in Heraklion, aiming to empower young people to develop the skills which are critical for today’s labor market. The programme is a joint initiative of the Public Employment Service (DYPA) and UNICEF Greece, designed to foster 21st-century skills and green skills, ensuring that young people are better prepared to meet the demands of the modern workforce.

The event was opened by Stefanos Polymenopoulos, Deputy Governor of DYPA, who highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for young people to gain practical experience and guidance for entering the labor market.

During the event, Konstantinos Flouris, Head of the Region of Crete, Directorate of Education, Employment & Commerce, presented the regional mechanism for identifying labor market needs and the counseling workshops for youth entry or re-entry into the workforce, emphasizing the development of skills such as curiosity and attentiveness.

Kalliopi Choustalaki, Educator at Vocational Apprenticeship School (EPAS) Heraklion, highlighted that EPAS programs cultivate both practical and soft skills, including empathy, emotional management and adaptability, which are essential for successful integration into the labor market.

Garyfallia Charitaki, Assistant Professor at the University of Thessaly, underlined that the transition from education to employment is a continuous process requiring timely planning and support.

Closing the session, Giannis Mantzanas, Member of the UNICEF Children and Youth Advisory Board, emphasized the importance of understanding others’ needs while staying true to oneself, a skill that helps young people make conscious and informed career choices.

The event concluded with a Vocational Apprenticeship School (EPAS) student describing how, through apprenticeship and the practical skills developed at EPAS, she has gained greater confidence in communicating with colleagues and the people she serves, highlighting the value of these skills for the personal and professional growth of young people.
