Greece turns blue for World Children’s Day

ATHENS, NOVEMBER 22, 2021: As part of the celebrations for this year's World Children's Day, archeological sites, monuments, emblematic pieces of art, town halls, institutions and central squares turned blue across the country in a move to support and commemorate the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (Convention on the Rights of the Child), on Saturday, November 20, 2021, at the urging of the UNICEF Office in Greece.
Among those were:
- the Archaeological Site and the Museum of the Olympic Games in Ancient Olympia,
- the Panathenaic Stadium
- the White Tower
- the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
- the emblematic sculptures of the Georgios Zongolopoulos Foundation in Athens, Thessaloniki and Egypt: the "Umbrellas" in Thessaloniki’s seaside, the "Umbrellas" in Psychiko Lighthouse in Athens, the "Pentacycle" in Omonia Square and the "Umbrellas" in Egypt.
- the National Theatre’s Ziller building on Agiou Konstantinou Street
- the Athens Concert Hall
- the Thessaloniki’s Concert Hall
- the Fountain in Omonia Square, as well as city Halls throughout Greece including the Municipalities of Ioannina, Veria, Pyrgos, Pylaia-Chortiatis, Argos Oristikou, etc.
The lighting of the above was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Central Archaeological Council, the Central Council of Modern Monuments, the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, the George Zongolopoulos Foundation, the Board of Directors of the National Concert Halls of Athens and Thessaloniki as well as the Central Union of Greek Municipalities (K.E.D.E.) and the Municipalities of Athens, Thessaloniki, Psychiko, Ioannina, Pyrgos, Ancient Olympia, Veria, Argos Oristiko, Pylaia-Chortiatis etc.
KIDS are RIGHT! Children are claiming their rights!
At the same time, this year UNICEF Greece supports the ‘KIDS are RIGHT’ initiative, an initiative led by KIDOT in collaboration with 10 organizations, each of which organizes 10 experiential activities with free entry aiming at informing and raising awareness of children’s rights. Among the programme’s participants were: Amnesty International, The Smile of the Child, Network for the Rights of the Child, El Sistema Greece, Iasis and Edify Kids, In Common, Ison, Organization Earth, Peace Journalism Lab of the Department of Journalism and Media of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Young Men’s Christian Association and Veria’s Municipal Library.
