Since 2023, Lidl Hellas has been a strategic partner of UNICEF in the Program to Combat Violence Against Children, implementing systemic interventions that have a meaningful impact. These include the first nationwide survey of administrative data regarding incidents of violence and ways to address them, as well as the implementation of a holistic pilot Child Protection model at the municipal level in the Municipality of Athens. At the same time, other important initiatives have been implemented to strengthen child protection.

Creating safe school environments where children thrive and teachers and parents are supported
A long-term investment in safe and inclusive schools. With an emphasis on prevention—rather than merely reacting—this initiative empowers teachers, students, and parents to foster a positive school climate and address violence before it occurs. Participatory activities, training, and awareness-raising build resilience and trust within the school environment.
Making children's rights everyone's responsibility
By integrating children’s rights into the core of higher education, public policy, and social life, with the aim of empowering universities and young people to lead a cultural shift based on participation and inclusion. Through a nationwide network of 24 Children’s Rights Centers (CRCs) to be established at all public universities by 2027 (with 11 already operational by June 2025), the initiative institutionalizes education on and the defense of children’s rights in higher education.

Providing training, resources, and ongoing support to academic staff so that they can effectively integrate children’s rights into their courses, teaching methods, and student assessments — fostering a rights-based perspective across all academic disciplines.

Inspiring and strengthening student participation in initiatives to promote children’s rights and foster public dialogue—such as the Rights On Air program, where students create and share podcasts on topics such as mental health, climate change, and equality, thereby amplifying the voices of young people in the public sphere.

Build capacity across all areas of child protection and the justice system to identify, prevent, and respond to violence—ensuring that every child grows up feeling safe, supported, and heard.
Empowering professionals to end violence against children
Based on the successful pilot programs in Athens, Thessaloniki, and Heraklion, this initiative strengthens and expands municipal child protection services throughout Greece—supporting frontline professionals, improving procedures, and ensuring coordinated, child-centered support in every community.
Training and equipping legal professionals, juvenile court officials, and other judicial system personnel to protect children’s rights throughout the judicial process—by promoting alternatives to detention, meaningful participation, and protection from revictimization, in accordance with international standards for child-friendly justice.
