Empowering Ethiopian youth through online platforms and sports engagements
Introducing U-Report and providing a new platform for the youth to raise their voice
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – UNICEF, the Sports for Child, and Adolescent Development in Ethiopia (S4CADE) programme, along with the Refugee Coordination and Youth Engagement Unit and the Addis Ababa City Youth and Sports Centre hosted various events from 23-28 December 2023.
The key highlight of the event was the introduction of U-Report. U-Report is a platform that helps young people voice their opinions, engage in dialogue, and influence decisions that shape their future. The platform includes interactive features like polls, chatbots, one-to-one support, and outreach. Through these features, young people can voice their views on various topics ranging from education and health to civic involvement and social justice.
The S4CADE showcased a youth and sports programme that featured 19 sports, including paralympic sports and taekwondo. The programme also included life-skill training to cultivate solidarity, competition, and common purpose. The taekwondo clubs, cycling tournament, and event organized for youth with hearing disabilities drew over 700 attendees, including 325 young females across Addis Ababa.
“U-Report is fantastic. I think it offers a hub for critical youth-focused information on health and nutrition and cross-border concerns. I see U-Report as a platform and a community where youths, including those with disabilities, can find their voice, access essential information, and engage in meaningful activities,” says Hilina Samuel, a 25-year-old with hearing disability from Addis Ababa -Kazanchis.
U-Report has been successfully implemented in over 99 countries worldwide, reaching 33.4 million young people, and is now being rolled out in Ethiopia. This expansion aims to create a vibrant community for the youth to actively participate in shaping their community and society at large.
