UNICEF Delivers Education And Play Kits To Support 20,000 Children

UNICEF Botswana handed over a consignment of education and early learning supplies to the Government of Botswana, strengthening efforts to ensure that thousands of children across the country have access to quality learning, play and psychosocial support.
The donation, officially presented by UNICEF Botswana Acting Representative Dr Kimanzi Muthengi to Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, Honourable Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, included 210 Education Kits, 210 Early Childhood Development Kits, 80 Recreation Kits and 5,000 school bags. Together, these supplies are expected to benefit approximately 20,000 children in schools and early learning centres across Botswana.
The handover reaffirmed the long-standing partnership between UNICEF and the Government of Botswana to improve learning outcomes, strengthen education systems and ensure that every child has the opportunity to develop, learn and reach their full potential.
For many children, the supplies represent far more than classroom materials.
For a young child beginning their educational journey, a box of crayons, puzzles and learning materials can ignite imagination, creativity and a lifelong love of learning. For learners whose education has been disrupted by floods or other emergencies, a School-in-a-Box provides essential teaching and learning materials that help restore a sense of normalcy and continuity.
For children recovering from difficult experiences, recreational kits create opportunities to play, build friendships and strengthen emotional well-being - an essential part of healing and healthy development.
By combining education with opportunities for structured play and psychosocial support, the kits help create safe and nurturing learning environments where children can regain confidence, participate actively in class and continue learning, even in challenging circumstances.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Honourable Nono Kgafela-Mokoka, Minister of Child Welfare and Basic Education, acknowledged UNICEF's longstanding contribution to Botswana's education sector and its continued support for children's development.
The Minister noted that the partnership between the Government of Botswana and UNICEF had delivered significant results over the years through technical expertise, research, policy support and the sharing of global best practices. She welcomed the donation as a timely intervention that would help address learning poverty while improving children's access to quality education and essential learning resources.
"Education is one of the most powerful investments we can make in a child's future," he said. "These learning and recreation kits are more than educational supplies - they represent protection, dignity, resilience and hope. They help children continue learning, recover from adversity and develop the skills they need to build brighter futures."
The donation forms part of UNICEF's broader commitment to supporting Botswana's efforts to strengthen foundational learning, improve education quality and ensure that schools remain safe and child-friendly spaces where every learner can succeed.
