Botswana Launches Nationwide Polio Vaccination Campaign
The Government of Botswana, with support from UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners, launched a nationwide oral polio vaccination campaign to protect more than 272,000 children under the age of five against the threat of polio.
The campaign forms part of Botswana's efforts to maintain the country's polio-free status while responding to the continued risk of outbreaks in the region. Targeting all children aged 0–59 months, regardless of their previous vaccination status, the campaign aims to strengthen population immunity and prevent the spread of the virus.
The campaign was officially launched by Honourable Ketlhalefile F. C. Motshegwa, Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, who called on parents, caregivers and communities to ensure every eligible child receives the vaccine.
This is not a distant threat - it is a regional reality that demands immediate, coordinated and decisive action," the Minister said. “As long as polio exists anywhere, it remains a threat everywhere. Vaccination is not just a personal choice; it is a collective responsibility.” He noted that by vaccinating their children, caregivers help protect not only their own families but also communities across Botswana.

She emphasized that UNICEF's support extends beyond vaccine procurement to strengthening cold chain systems, logistics and community engagement to ensure vaccines remain safe and effective throughout the supply chain. UNICEF is also working with the Botswana Red Cross Society and community leaders to provide caregivers with accurate information, build confidence in immunization and address misinformation that can prevent children from receiving essential vaccines.
The nationwide campaign is being implemented in two rounds - from 5–8 May and 8 - 11 June 2026 - to maximize protection for every eligible child. The launch underscored the importance of strong partnerships between the Government of Botswana, UNICEF, WHO and other health partners in protecting children from vaccine-preventable diseases and strengthening routine immunization systems.
