My Unexpected Journey to Leadership
World Children’s Day Blog Series
This all started with my English teacher in second form telling me how excellent a reader I was at Stann Creek Ecumenical College. I didn't take the compliment seriously, but I remembered. The following year, in third form, my classmate, Dylon Williams, a child parliamentarian of cohort 4 from the National Children's Parliament, made his big speech of experience. His persuasion led me to where I am today. He has always been empowering and used it to the best of his ability.
In 2024, I signed up to join the National Children's Parliament, and in all honesty, I had no expectations. The National Commission for Families and Children (NCFC) notified me that it was rescheduled to November 2025. Fast forward to now, and I can gladly say that I made the right decision in signing up for the 2025 National Children's Parliament.
I had no idea that I would ever be selected to be Speaker of the House, so naturally, that role came to me as a surprise. Being Speaker of the House for the National Children's Parliament has truly been a great and unique experience for me.
Imagine being the only child from Hopkins Village holding such a role. Younger me would have been scared to even join the Children's Parliament to start with. Imagine being called “Madam Speaker”. It still feels like a dream, but I did play my role with some help.
I listened to everyone’s voices, speech, and opinions on everything, including preventive healthcare. I can truly say that working with so many people and personalities really opened my door to endless thoughts and possibilities.
But it reminds me, many of our children still need basic help and access to healthcare. Many of our children, especially in rural communities, still suffer from negligence, poverty, limited opportunities, and so much more. I believe that as children, we should all let our voices be heard in the most respected destination - the National House of Assembly in Belize.
I thank the National Commission for Families and Children (NCFC) for leadership and dedication in creating spaces where young voices are heard and valued. Serving as Speaker of the House for the 2025 National Children’s Parliament was a profound honor, and I recognize the vital role NCFC played in making this platform possible.
UNICEF’s support has created a space where young Belizeans like me can speak boldly, dream freely, and advocate for meaningful change. I am inspired by the dedication of the organization to amplify youth perspectives and foster inclusive dialogue across the nation. Our voices are empowered and should bring change for a better, brighter tomorrow for the children after us.
As we continue to build a better and brighter future for Belize’s children, I look forward to collaborating with NCFC and UNICEF on future initiatives that celebrate culture, resilience, and youth leadership. Together, it is possible to keep the momentum alive through storytelling, advocacy, and action.
If we are tomorrow's future, we should make tomorrow's future better and brighter for all of us.”
