A milestone for stronger Social Protection in Belize
Building accountable systems that support families
Belize has taken an important step toward strengthening its social protection systems ensuring that families, especially the most vulnerable, are heard, supported, and protected.
With support from the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), UNICEF and the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs are working together to develop a comprehensive Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM). This system will improve how feedback, complaints, and appeals are received, addressed, and resolved across social services in Belize.
This week marks a key milestone in the process, with the conclusion of nationwide consultations with frontline personnel in Orange Walk. These consultations, previously held and validated with stakeholders in Belize City, Stann Creek, Toledo, and Orange Walk, have helped shape a GRM that is responsive, accessible, and effective.
By strengthening community engagement and accountability, the GRM will help build trust in social services and ensure that families have safe and meaningful avenues to raise concerns and provide feedback. It is a critical step toward improving service delivery and protecting the rights of those who need support most.
UNICEF, with support from ECHO, remains committed to working alongside the Government of Belize to strengthen systems that leave no family behind. We commend the Ministry of Human Development for its leadership in prioritizing reforms that advance transparency, accountability, and inclusive social protection for every child and every family.
