World Children's Day 2023
UNICEF Zambia Celebrates the World Children's Day 2023

RENEWING OUR PROMISE FOR CHILDREN’S RIGHTS
World Children’s Day is a day that governments around the world celebrate to mark achievements on child rights and to highlight critical issues affecting children’s lives and support the engagement of children and young people as advocates for their own rights.
This year’s celebrations will take place in Walvis Bay, Namibia on 18-20 November and will build on the momentum created in Botswana (2021) and in Zambia (2022) during the regional engagement which brought together H.E. Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana, H.E. Dr. Hage G. Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia; H.E. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia and H.E. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe and over five hundred children from the four countries.
One of the key outcomes of these historic meetings, is a commitment made by the four Heads of States to create a Network – through which they will continue to discuss issues of mutual concern and, come up with tangible strategies to address the rights of children in their respective countries.
Therefore, once again, the 2023 World Children’s Day regional celebrations bring forth an opportunity for the four Heads of State to renew their promises for children’s rights, rescuing SDGs, and ensuring that no child is left behind.
In the lead up to the event in Namibia, a series of consultations with children and youth will be organized in Zambia to discuss key issues affecting their lives and prepare the ten children that will represent the country in Walvis Bay.
The ten children who have been selected to represent Zambia at the Namibia multi-country event will come to Lusaka on 13 and 14 November to get prepared for the different activities that will take place in Walvis Bay. As part of the preparations, they will discuss the call to action from Zambia and will have the chance to discuss it with other children from across the country.
An additional three children from each province will be selected to come to Lusaka and participate at the World Children’s Day workshop which will take place on 13 and 14 November. Together with the 10 children who will go to Namibia, they will be working on a call to action, based on the views of children captured in consultations leading up to WCD, which will be presented to policy makes at an event on 15 November to mark WCD in Zambia in 2023.
All these children will participate in a two-day workshop that will help them prepare for the big event in Lusaka. This event will be led by children for children and will be the main activity to mark this year’s WCD in the country.
