ZUSA Commemorates World AIDS Day with Vulnerable Youth

By Betty Chella Nalungwe

LUSAKA, Zambia – On World AIDS Day, UNICEF Zambia’s Staff Association (ZUSA) partnered with Brothers for Life ambassadors in providing a mentoring session to vulnerable youth from surrounding compounds bordering the Lusaka neighborhood of Ibex Hill.

The session ended with a friendly football match when the youth team Ibex Rangers defeated a UNICEF recreational squad by 2-0.

The event was holistic and all-inclusive. UNICEF partners such as ChildLine Zambia, Africa Directions, and the Brothers for Life ambassadors came in to fill the gaps on the UNICEF football side.

The partners supported the programme with counselors who shared time with the teenagers and discussed how they can go for HIV services like HIV testing and counselling (HTC).

The youngsters were also encouraged to become “U-Reporters” by sending join to 878 and then calling 990 to receive more information – both the SMS and the call are toll free.

UNICEF Zambia Chief, Communications Patrick Slavin donated soccer balls and U-Report t-shirts to the Ibex Rangers, who were delighted.

“This has been one of the best days at Ibex Rangers. We have enjoyed it and would like for UNICEF to come back and play with us again soon,” said Ibex Rangers captain Chola Kabwe.
