Close to 39 million children are out-of-school in West and Central Africa.

Covid-19 has highlighted and compounded the inadequacies of education systems in the region, and urgent funding is needed to train more teachers as well as give children access to quality education.

The policy brief provides i) a snapshot of the situation in the education sector in the West and Central Africa region (WCAR), focusing on key challenges that countries are facing to improve learning outcomes for children, ii) an overview of government spending in the education sector across the region, looking at trends, size, composition and type of public spending; and iii) key recommendations for consideration by ministries of Education and Finance aimed at accelerating education outcomes through better use of public resources allocated to the education sector.
