If We Contribute

An initiative to engage children and adolescents in understanding the “Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC)” and the mitigation and adaptation to climate change.

If We Contribute

Children are the least responsible for climate change, yet they suffer its most severe consequences. They are on the frontlines of the climate crisis—not just as victims, but also as potential agents of change.

Climate change is a tremendous challenge, but not an impossible one—if we remain persistent and determined to create change together. In just a few decades, today’s children and adolescents will become the world’s leaders tackling this issue to protect their own rights and lives. It is critical that children begin participating now in order to make sound decisions about this major issue. Early involvement not only helps children understand the science and impacts of climate change, but also empowers them to take action, contribute to solutions, and advocate for a safe, clean, and sustainable environment for themselves and their communities.

As global awareness of the severity of climate change continues to grow, alongside rapid advances in science and technology, today’s children and adolescents are being given an extraordinary opportunity to express their views, contribute ideas, and take part directly in shaping their future.

Recognizing this, UNICEF has launched an initiative to develop a child-friendly version of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) document. This tool is designed to inform, empower, and connect children with the national climate agenda, enabling meaningful participation in the country’s response to climate change.

What is the child-friendly version of Viet Nam’s NDC?

This is an initiative led by UNICEF and its partners to present information about the NDC (Nationally Determined Contributions) in a clear, accessible, and child-friendly way. Through this initiative, children and adolescents can more easily access, understand, and actively contribute to climate change response plans.

Listening to the voices of children and adolescents

To bring children’s voices to the table, UNICEF conducted in-person consultations with 215 children and adolescents in Hanoi, Cao Bang, Can Tho, Da Nang, Gia Lai and Soc Trang provinces, including 117 children from mountainous areas and 26 children in vulnerable circumstances. In addition, nearly 2,500 opinions from children and adolescents across 61 provinces and cities were collected through an online survey as part of the “If We Contribute” campaign. These contributions are being compiled and will be submitted to the drafting committee of Viet Nam’s NDC 3.0, to ensure that children’s voices are integrated into the final NDC, scheduled to be submitted to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change by the end of 2025.
