Dear beloved students and parents,
The English Speaking Contest on disaster risk reduction and climate actions is co-organized by the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority (MARD) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Viet Nam with the support of the Government of Japan and Amslink English Center.
Are you?
- A secondary or high school student in Viet Nam.

Objectives
- To support the 11th Meeting of the ASEAN Committee on Disaster Management and its side activities during Viet Nam chairmanship in 2023.
- To disseminate knowledge on disaster risk reduction and climate actions.
- To raise awareness and strengthen skills for children and the youth in responding to natural disasters and climate change.
- To create interest among authorities and citizens, enhance understanding, responsibility, and participation of families, communities, organizations, and political-social organizations in the importance of disaster prevention towards sustainable development and a disaster-safe society.
- To create interest among authorities and citizens about the importance of child-centered campaigns on disaster prevention and responses to climate change, aiming for sustainable development and a safe society against natural disasters.

- Your innovative ideas related to disaster risk reduction and climate actions.
- Your local experience in disaster prediction, prevention and response, to frequently occurring disasters in your area.
How to join?
General information
- Contestants may enter individually or as part of a group (maximum of 2 members).
- Presentations must be delivered in English.
- Content you present must discuss the above topics.
Preliminary Round
- The preliminary round will take place online.
- Entries must be submitted to the Organizing Committee by August 25, 2023, via email at sticd.dd@mard.gov.vn.
- The top 10 entries will be selected for the final round.
Final Round
- The final round will take place in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province in October 2023.
- Finalists will draw among the 10 assigned topics.
- Each finalist will have 10 minutes to prepare and 5 minutes to present their arguments.
- Results will be announced by the panel of judges.
Prizes: TOTAL OF 200 MILLION VND WORTH PRIZES
Preliminary Round
- The first 30 contestants/groups to submit their entries will receive a souvenir gift.
Final Round
- 1st Prize: 4 million VND
- 3 Second Prizes: 3 million VND/each
- 3 Third Prizes: 2 million VND/each
- 3 Consolation Prizes: 1 million VND/each
- 2 additional prizes will be awarded based on the total number of likes and shares of the contestant’s/group’s entry on the Thien tai The gioi and Amslink English Center: 1 million VND/each. Please see the details in the Additional Prize Scoring, as below (*).
- Each finalist will be awarded an English Scholarship from Amslink English Center
In addition, the contestant/group who wins the 1st Prize will have the opportunity to:
- Be awarded by the National Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control in Ha Long Bay on International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, on October 13, 2023;
- Represent Vietnamese youth to deliver a speech at the 11th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Management in Quang Ninh.

- The Winner will deliver a speech at the 11th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Disaster Risk Management and International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13, 2023.
CONTEST PARTICIPATION GUIDELINES:
Preliminary Round:
- Who can join? The contest is open to Vietnamese secondary and high school students who reside in Vietnam (ages 12 to 18).
- There is no limit to the number of entries per contestant.
- The submission must include the attached entry information form (here)
- Consider the following for innovation: What challenges or experiences have you, your family, friends, or those around you faced? How have natural disasters or climate change impacted your lives? What actions can children or young people take, and what will you do personally? What support is needed and from whom to implement these actions?

Final round
- Finalists will participate in an online training course on disaster risk management and climate change adaptation, led by experts from the VDDMA and UNICEF, during the third week of September 2023.
- Up to 02 finalists/entries will be covered the expenses (travel, accommodation) to join the Final round in Ha Long City.

- Note: Cheating, such as hacked likes, fake likes, abnormal shares, or spam comments, will not be counted.
- Entries will be reviewed by the judges and posted on the Fanpage. The total number of likes and shares will be counted from the time of posting on the Fanpage until the end of September 1, 2023
