ALGARVE, Portugal, 19 November 2004 – Some 500 broadcast news professionals are gathered here for the largest-ever international broadcast news conference – News Xchange 2004. In attendance are journalists from CNN, BBC, APTN, Reuters, and other major news organizations. UNICEF, reaching out to news broadcasters around the world, is represented by a delegation headed by Executive Director Carol Bellamy.

During a panel discussion, Ms. Bellamy spoke about the aid agency’s role in news broadcasting. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and recording star Angelique Kidjo gave a special performance for conference delegates.

This year's event focused on a wide range of topics, ranging from coverage of the 2004 US election to safety issues facing journalists today. The conference also explored how journalists deal with humanitarian issues, with a particular focus on the continuing crisis in Sudan’s Darfur Region.
