Challenge
The current economic crisis has only further impeded access to basic services, such as access to sanitation, hygiene, clean environments, and safe water for children and their families. When working on these issues, UNICEF focuses on the most vulnerable individuals and takes into account the special needs of the migrant population.
Solution
UNICEF works with its partners to ensure a clean and safe environment in communities, educational settings, and health facilities so that children and adolescents can exercise their right to access safe water and sanitation, and so that they, along with their families, adopt good hygiene practices.
To ensure this, UNICEF facilitates access to safe water distribution, sanitation, promotion of hygiene habits, and essential supplies for hygiene in schools, communities, protection spaces, and health centers for children, adolescents, and their families. It also supports hospital services to have the necessary hygienic conditions and prevent the spread of coronavirus and other infectious diseases.
UNICEF contributions to water, sanitation, and hygiene for Venezuelan children in 2021:
- More than 1,500,000 people, including children and adolescents, have improved access to safe water for consumption, thanks to the rehabilitation of urban and rural supply systems.
- More than 38,000 children have improved access to drinking water and hygiene in 88 schools, including menstrual hygiene measures.
- 67 health centers received cleaning and hygiene products, personal protective equipment, handwashing points, improved infrastructure, and training and support for the prevention and control of infections.
- More than 550,000 people received information on essential hygiene practices/hygiene items, including menstrual hygiene supplies, COVID-19 prevention, handwashing, and water treatment/ storage.
