The United Nations Children’s Fund receives UAH 76,500 from ING Bank as a result ‘Run for UNICEF’ charitable marathon

Kyiv, Ukraine – The employees of ING Bank Ukraine took part in a charitable marathon ‘Run for UNCEF’ to raise funds for UNICEF Ukraine. The marathon in Kyiv took place for the third year in a row within the framework of global partnership between ING Bank and UNICEF. Each year, the bank matches the amount of donation raised during the marathon from its own budget and allocates it for support of children affected by the conflict in eastern Ukraine.

This year, 28 runners took part in the ‘Run for UNICEF’ marathon including 5children and 16 volunteers. The run was 5 km-long – from Poshtova Square to Spaska St. where ING Bank office is located. The participants were allowed to cover the distance by foot, bicycle or roller skates. UNICEF staff and volunteers of youth opinion poll U‑Report (another UNICEF initiative) supported the marathon.

A total of UAH 76,500 was raised, including UAH 25,500 of charitable donations by the bank employees and UAH 51,000 allocated from ING Bank budget. This money will be transferred to UNICEF to support its education initiatives, in particular, to buy educational kits for conflict-affected children. According to UNICEF estimates, a total of 300 thousand children out of 580 thousand conflict-affected children are in need of immediate support to continue their education.

“Education is extremely important for children in emergencies. Thanks to the cooperation with ING Bank, UNICEF is able to support even more children in continuing their education and overcoming the obstacles caused by the armed conflict. We highly appreciate the support of ING Bank,” UNICEF Ukraine Deputy Representative Rudi Luchmann said. Since the beginning of the conflict, UNICEF supported reconstruction of 57 schools damaged by fighting and provided educational kits to 200 thousand children.

“ING Run for UNICEF has already become a good tradition. The most important about the Run is that it actually helps to attract attention to the problems of children on the east of Ukraine and gives all of us an opportunity to fundraise together for the benefits of the most vulnerable children. We are delighted to share our special event with colleagues in UNICEF. Looking forward to our continuous fruitful partnership in the future,” Erik Versavel, ING Bank Chairman of the Management Board said.

UNICEF and ING Bank established a strategic partnership aimed at improving access to better education for more than 1 million children throughout the world. In Ukraine, this partnership started in 2014. Since then, UNICEF and ING Bank direct their united efforts at improving standards of the children affected by the conflict in eastern Ukraine. UNICEF hopes for expanding cooperation with private sector in Ukraine to provide support to more children.
