KYIV, 7 August 2014 – Today the Coordination Forum “Ensuring children’s rights to education in the regions affected by armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine” took place in Kyiv under the aegis of UNICEF and Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner on Human Rights with the support of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The aim of the Forum is to consolidate all partners’ efforts, identify response capacities and ability of each involved party to provide the necessary aid. In the oblasts most affected by crisis the number of schools stands at 1,735 and according to official statistics 117 are completely or partially damaged.

“UNICEF continues monitoring and we are very much aware of the increasing negative impact that the conflict is having on the lives of children and their families in Eastern Ukraine,” - said Giovanna Barberis, UNICEF Ukraine Representative.

The coordination forum was attended by the representatives of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Parliamentary Committee on Education and Science of Ukraine, local authorities from Donetsk and Luhansk oblast, as well as delegates of State Emergency Service of Ukraine, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Policy, international organizations and private charity foundations.

The Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Valeriya Lutkovska noted: “We need to make everything possible in order to ensure that children in Eastern Ukraine realize their right to education and the schools and kindergartens are fully prepared to admit all children in order for them to be able to move on to peaceful life.”

The Forum participants have adopted a resolution stipulating coordinated actions to address and improve the situation with access to education in Eastern Ukraine in order to ensure that every child in Donetsk and Luhansk oblast is able to start 2014-2015 academic year.

The attendees also watched a few OneMinunteJR films produced by internally displaced children from Eastern Ukraine who are currently based in Lviv.
