UNICEF and National Olympic Committee of Ukraine agree on cooperation

President Sergiy Bubka with UNICEF Representative in Ukraine Yukie Mokuo

Kyiv, 11 March 2013 - United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Representative in Ukraine Yukie Mokuo met the President of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine Sergiy Bubka.

Yukie Mokuo and Sergiy Bubka discussed the long-term cooperation in educational and social projects, joining efforts to promote children’s rights in Ukraine.

Yukie Mokuo welcomed the NOC of Ukraine current projects targeted at children and youth. In particularly, she was impressed by the Olympic lesson initiative taking place every year in all the schools of Ukraine educating over two million children.

"I am happy that National Olympic Committee organises so many activities for the Ukrainian children and adolescents,” Yukie Mokuo said. ”It is especially good that such actions involve absolutely all regions and different ages and groups of people from coaches to parents. UNICEF stands ready to cooperate and to share our experience on sports for development initiatives worldwide to be implemented in Ukraine jointly” – she added.

"In my opinion, the NOC mission is to address a much wider range of tasks than ensuring the athletes participation in the Olympic Games. It is important to distract children from dangerous activities on the streets and from the temptations of the virtual world and make them interested in physical culture and sports, healthy lifestyle. Developing community using the multifaceted possibilities of sport is our lever to change thinking and behavior," Sergiy Bubka said.

"Our philosophy is formation of healthy and strong nation, upbringing of well-educated and active young people, who will become new Olympic champions. It is sport that teaches best to overcome difficulties, trains will and self-control, teaches to live in accordance with established rules and respect competitors. Thus, we are trying to promote and strive to spread the unique and universal Olympic values in the best possible way," main Olympian of the country emphasized.

The NOC President informed the guests on the numerous projects of the National Olympic Committee, including the all-Ukrainian events for children "Olympic Stork", "Olympic Book" and "Olympic Corner" as well as "Olympic Lesson", which are designed to involve children in sport as much as possible.
