UNICEF and NTV launch campaign for children in Uganda
Organizations will highlight issues affecting children and how they must be addressed for Uganda to realize its Vision 2040
KAMPALA, 18 July, 2014 – UNICEF, the United Nation’s Children’s Agency, and NTV, one of the leading media agencies in Uganda, today launched a major campaign for children in Uganda.
The campaign, marked by the Twitter handle #InvestInUGchildren : Realize Uganda’s Vision 2040, will highlight the many issues currently affecting children across Uganda and how they must be addressed for Uganda to realize its vision of becoming a modern, competitive and prosperous, upper Middle Income country by 2040.
“Many issues are currently limiting millions of children across Uganda from realizing their full potential,” said Ms. Aida Girma, UNICEF’s Representative to Uganda. “If these issues are not more directly and fully addressed by all stakeholders across the country – from Government to the private sector to civil society - Uganda’s ambitious 2040 vision will almost certainly not be realized.”
Today, fifty five per cent of Uganda’s under 5 year olds – 3.7 million children – live in poverty while nearly 40% of Uganda’s 6 -17 year olds also live in poverty.
Furthermore, with one third of all young Ugandan children currently experiencing stunted physical and cognitive growth due to under nutrition, the equivalent of 5.6% of Uganda’s annual GDP – 1.8 trillion Schillings - is estimated to be lost.
“Today’s children are the drivers of tomorrow’s future,” said Ms. Aggie Asiimwe Konde, NTV’s Managing Director. “It is essential that we shine a spotlight on the plethora of issues that Ugandan children are currently experiencing and how they are affecting their futures and the future of Uganda.”
The organizations will work together to develop and cover stories on children’s issues over the next year as well as mobilize mass support to accelerate the improvement of children’s lives, especially those who are most deprived and marginalized.
NTV will leverage all of its television and digital platforms and programs to robustly highlight the current issues children across Uganda are facing while UNICEF will provide access to all of its evidence on children and technical expertise.
Both organizations will work together to launch joint initiatives that benefit children as well as cover major international days and events, including Universal Children’s Day on November 20th of this year, which is the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
