Ashgabat, 30 November 2021 – During 22-26 November 2021 UNICEF and Ministry of Health and Medical Industry trained 52 pediatricians from every velayat in Turkmenistan as trainers in Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI). The IMCI programme interventions are important to improve child survival, reduce illness and disability, and to promote growth and development among children under five years of age.

The trainings were followed by the first technical meeting with the National expert group, where participants together with UNICEF experts discussed the draft roadmap for introduction of the IMCI programme nation-wide. Revamping the implementation of this programme at the national level is a key approach to support the recently adopted Healthy Mother, Healthy Child, Healthy Future national strategy for 2021-2025.

Turkmenistan has made significant efforts to introduce IMCI scaled up implementation since 2001. Last year, with UNICEF support the country has adopted IMCI Guidebook for health professionals working at hospital level, which improved the quality of mother and child health services at secondary level of the health care system.

The work in this area will continue for strengthening the health system, including enriching capacity of health care professionals, enhancing case management of health staff, empowering caregivers with parenting skills and community practices.

“IMCI is an indispensable child survival strategy, which creates a unique opportunity to end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age in Turkmenistan. Scaling up the implementation of this programme will accelerate the progress to achieve this SDG target by 2030. UNICEF will continue to support the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry to ensure that every child survives and thrives” - said Sachly Duman, Health & Nutrition Specialist of UNICEF in Turkmenistan.
