Between May-June 2023, UNICEF in Turkmenistan and the Office of the Ombudsman jointly organized a series of workshops on raising the awareness on the protection and the promotion of child rights for the civil servants of Ahal, Balkan and Mary velayats that work with children. Workshops were carried out within the framework of the Joint Work Plan for 2023 between the office of UNICEF in Turkmenistan and the Office of Ombudsman.

The Ombudsman and the UNICEF Representative emphasized the importance of independent monitoring envisioned in the mandate of the Office to ensure the protection of the rights of the most vulnerable population, including children and people with disabilities. Workshops were held in Annau city of Ahal velayat, in Avaza National Tourist Zone of Balkan velayat, and in Mary city of Mary velayat, where the Deputies of Mejlis, representatives of Hakimlik, the Prosecutor’s Office, Judiciary Court, Police Department, Civil Status Registration Office, Bar Association, Youth Organization, Women’s Union, schools, health clinics, and media learned about the UN Conventions on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the Rights of People with Disabilities (CPRD).

In his opening remarks to the participants of the workshops, Mr. Mohammad Fayyazi, UNICEF’s Representative in Turkmenistan, mentioned: “We express our gratitude to the Office of the Ombudsman for initiating the velayat workshops with specialists working with children and we hope we all can learn from each other to make the life of every child better, as well as contribute to the realization of national priorities and the implementation of international obligations of the country”.

Throughout the sessions, the civil servants of Ahal, Balkan and Mary velayats enhanced their knowledge on the international and national legislation on child rights and how to protect and provide their rights to ensure the best interest of a child, as well as the role of the UNICEF and Office of Ombudsman in this area.

UNICEF will continue working with the Office of the Ombudsman to promote child rights as well as to increase the national capacities of independent monitoring in this important area.
