Medical professionals strengthen knowledge in medical ethics and health communication

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, 15 April 2010 – UNICEF and the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan have conducted a four day workshop for health communicators and journalists on medical ethics, psychology and health communication. The workshop aimed at strengthening knowledge and skills of the medical professionals on the importance of interpersonal communications and counselling between patients and service providers, which in turn, will improve health care outcomes and empower communities to practice healthy lifestyles.

The workshop was facilitated by an international expert in health communication from Moscow Sechenov Medical Academy. The expert familiarized the participants, representatives from Ashgabat and velayats Health Information Centre, AIDS centre, National Medical Institute, and media, with the latest trends in health communication and briefed them on legal, ethical, and social aspects of counselling.

This is the first workshop on medical ethics conducted by UNICEF in Turkmenistan for medical professionals who will further facilitate similar workshops in velayats as master trainers.
