One of the adults attending today’s art workshop was UNICEF’s Goodwill Ambassador Tuba Büyüküstün. After giving each other lots of hugs, Tuba and the 60 Turkish and Syrian children entered the exhibition at CerModern together. They discussed the colours and shapes and decided on the theme of the painting they were going to do together: Colours of Hope!

"Some of these children lost their homes, their loved ones... lost years of schooling. But they shouldn’t lose hope for the future. Today, we’ve expressed ourselves through colours. Being creative is theraupeutic for children and for adults. We’ve also had so much fun looking at the paintings at the exhibition together. It took us to a different world...” Tuba Büyüküstün said."
Ambassador Christian Berger, the Head of European Union Delegation to Turkey, Philippe Duamelle, UNICEF Representative to Turkey, and İbrahim Vurgun Kavlak, General Coordinator of ASAM also joined one of the 6 tables where they painted together with children.
The “One Day at a Museum” initiative is organized by UNICEF in partnership with ASAM and the with the financial support of the European Union.
The initiative gives the opportunity to Turkish and Syrian chidren from Al Farah Child and Family Support Center to go on an artful journey when they visit exhibitions and participate in the art workshops at the CerModern Museum in Ankara.
The objective is to support children’s psycho-social development and well-being and foster interaction between Syrian and Turkish children through arts in a pleasant and supportive environment. Since June 2018, hundreds of children benefitted from this initiative.
When asked about his opinion about the painting activity, Mohammed, 9 years old who lives in Ankara said: “Colouring fills me with joy... I can colour for hours on. The colours show my hopes... I hope to finish school, and I hope to become a doctor one day.”
When children and their adult guests finished colouring the pieces of the picture, they put them on the wall to make one big picture. They all stood back and observed their outcome with joy.
At the end of the workshop, the group of children took photographs and shared their conclusions about the art visits and how art and being with friends help them feel stronger than ever!
