As the Summer Holidays come to an end, we devote this issue to reviewing progress of the girls’ education campaign, Haydi Kızlar Okula! and look at various strategies that aim to close the gender gap in primary education here in Turkey.

The Ministry of National Education (MONE), UNICEF and our partners are confident that 300,000 girls who were previously out-of-school will enroll on the 13th of September.

Governors of the 33 priority provinces where Haydi Kızlar Okula! is now active met in Ankara at the beginning of June to declare their support for the campaign. We spoke to some of them about their opinions on the issue of girls’ education.

Gazel almost missed out on completing her primary education -- read her story in this issue.

Thousands of pre-fabricated buildings formerly used to temporarily house families after the Marmara earthquakes in 1999 are now empty -- read how some provinces have taken steps to use these empty utilities to alleviate the chronic shortage of schoolspace.
