Dili. 13 December 2019. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), today, handed over a range of equipment to the Ministry of Health to help boost maternal and child health and nutrition programming in Timor-Leste. The equipment was handed over to Dr. Odete da Silva Viegas, Director General of Health Service Delivery of the Ministry of Health by Valérie Taton, UNICEF Representative in Timor-Leste.

The equipment includes gynecology examination and delivery tables, midwifery kits, warmer systems, sterilizers, resuscitators, doppler FHR detectors, cooking demonstration equipment, and information technology material. All of the equipment will be sent to hospitals and health centers across Timor-Leste and will help improve care for mothers, babies and children.

“We know that giving every child a fair chance to survive and thrive depends on more than a single intervention. It requires government, healthcare workers, communities and families to follow through on their responsibilities for children, be it the provision of quality healthcare and information by the government, the responsibility of families and communities in ensuring babies and children receive the right nutrition, immunization and care, or ensuring data is collected, analyzed and used to improve services,” said Ms.Taton during the ceremony.

The medical equipment would be for Viqueque municipality, health promotion equipment to Aileu, Ainaro, Bobonaro, Ermera and Viqueque municipalities and equipment for nutrition programming for use by all Nutrition Coordinators and District health Public Health Officers from thirteen municipalities.

The equipment and material support will facilitate the provision of standard quality health care services, enhance knowledge of populations on healthy living and care seeking, and, in turn, improve the health condition of babies, children and mothers across Timor-Leste.

The provision of equipment complements the technical and financial support by UNICEF and other partners to help build the capacity of the health sector in Timor-Leste.

The equipment and UNICEF’s nutrition programme are funded by the European Union (EU) and Japan’s National Committee for UNICEF.
