DILI, 7 May 2020 – The United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) Representative, Valérie Taton, and top Timorese singer, Maria Vitória da Costa Borges (Marvi), signed an agreement today to continue joint advocacy actions for children and young people in Timor-Leste. The signing ceremony took place at an event held at the UNICEF office in Dili.

Marvi, who was the 2018 winner of The Voice Portugal competition, has been UNICEF Timor-Leste’s Youth Advocate since May 2019.

Marvi joins a number of global and regional personalities from various fields including sports, music, the performing arts and film, who support advocacy efforts for the rights of children and young people.

Over the past year, Marvi has taken part in a number of events and engagements that focused on raising awareness on issues children and young people face, and advocating for improving access to healthcare, education, protection, and participation.

“I am extremely pleased to continue this partnership with UNICEF, to build on our achievements of the past year and accelerate change for the children and young people of Timor-Leste,” said Marvi during the signing ceremony.

In the coming year, she will continue advocacy efforts to improve access to quality education, healthcare, protection, and increase young people’s participation in policy and development.

“Marvi has been an excellent advocate for child and youth rights, speaking from the heart, and touching hearts and lives through her advocacy,” said Valérie Taton, UNICEF Representative. “We look forward to working with Marvi to help shape a better future for all the children of Timor-Leste.”

Marvi has been passionate about singing and been associated with UNICEF from an early age – where her talent for singing was discovered at the age of three at a competition organised by UNICEF at a camp for internally displaced persons in 2006.
