DILI, Timor-Leste, 05 October 2017: The Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa’e (UNTL) and UNICEF Timor-Leste join hands to promote child rights in Timor-Leste. Professor Francisco Miguel Martins M.Hum, Rector of the UNTL and UNICEF Deputy Representative (OIC, Representative) Scott Whoolery signed the partnership agreement today at the Rector Office.

Based on the Joint Country Programme of UNICEF and the Government of Timor-Leste (2015-2019), the two organisations will collaborate on capacity building, research, training, and other relevant activities, by engaging related departments and institutions of the university to promote the rights of Timorese children and their families.

“Cooperation is one of the main vectors of the development of UNTL, the only public university of Timor-Leste, as demonstrated by the implementation of numerous initiatives of national and international nature, in accordance with the university’s Strategic Plan for the period 2011-2020. Many examples of productive and collaborative engagement between UNTL and the different UN agencies can be highlighted, putting in evidence the substantial breath of involvement across a wide range of areas. Today these links have been reinforced by signing a cooperation agreement between our University and UNICEF,” says Professor Francisco Miguel Martins M. Hum, during the ceremony.

“The partnership provides new opportunities for championing child rights in Timor-Leste. We will work together to enhance our knowledge and capacity to understand the needs of every child, and how best to reach them with required services and support. Through joint programming in the areas of research, capacity building and internship programmes, we will put our efforts toward building the human capital of this young nation, which will ultimately contribute to the realization of the rights of every child - boys and girls,” says Scott Whoolery, while signing the agreement.

Under this partnership, UNICEF Timor-Leste will support UNTL to enhance the capacity of faculty members and students of the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Education, Arts and Humanities, with a particular focus on the Department of Social Communication and the Peace and Conflict Studies Center, as well as with other relevant University faculties and departments.

UNTL and UNICEF Timor-Leste toward strengthened cooperation and the exploration of further opportunities to promote and protect child rights in the country.
