Campaign promoting education

BANGKOK, 31 August 2012 - UNICEF is continuing its television campaign to promote access to education for poor and disadvantaged children. The campaign  focuses on providing education opportunities for ethnic hill tribe children living in remote areas of Mae Hong Son province.

The campaign tells the story of Thanya, an ethnic Lahu girl, who lives in a small village in Pai. Due to the remoteness of her village, Thanya is unable to go to school, and she spends her days doing chores around the house and looking after her younger brother. Thanya, who is unable to speak Thai, has never even seen what a school looks like.

Through the campaign, UNICEF aims to increase public awareness on the importance of ensuring an education for all children in Thailand, particularly for poor and disadvantaged children such as Thanya. The campaign also seeks to raise funds needed to support programmes providing hill tribe children with access to an education. 

"Education is crucial for child development. It opens up opportunities for children, helps break the poverty cycle and gives them a better future,' says Rangsun Wiboonuppatum, Chief of Education for UNICEF Thailand.

Currently, there are about 600,000 children of primary school age in Thailand who are either not in school or who enrol late.
