UNICEF works with celebrities and other leaders who are committed to improving the lives of children. Celebrities attract attention, so they are in a position to focus the world’s eyes on the needs of children. They can make direct representations to those with the power to affect change. They can use their talents and fame to fundraise and advocate for children and support UNICEF’s mission to ensure every child’s right to health, education, equality and protection.
In Thailand, former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun has served as UNICEF Thailand Goodwill Ambassador since 1996 while Ann Thongprasom and Theeradej Wongpuapan, two of Thailand's most popular actors, were appointed as Youth Ambassadors during 2008-2011. In addition, between 1999 and 2005 actress Kathaleeya McIntosh also contributed to the success of UNICEF's advocacy and fundraising.
Globally, UNICEF has appointed over 200 Ambassadors from the world of arts, entertainment, sports and public life to help promote efforts to improve children’s well-being. Among the notables serving as UNICEF Ambassadors are David Beckham, Ricky Martin, Jackie Chan, Sir Alex Ferguson, Lucy Liu, Shakira Mebarak, Sebastio Salgado and Roger Federer.
