Children unite to deliver a message “for every child” before participating in the 2017 Skopje “Children's Mini Marathon”

SKOPJE, 6 May 2017 – Today, children participating in the 2017 “Children’s Mini Marathon” stood united with UNICEF and partners in sending a strong message on the need to give every child, a fair chance.

Every child is born with the inherent right to a healthy start in life, an education and a safe, secure childhood. Yet, many children are denied their rights,” said Ms. Elspeth Erickson, UNICEF Deputy Representative. “Today, we are really happy that children participating in this annual Mini Marathon join us in our call to ensure every child has a fair chance for a better future”.

Recognizing the unique power that sports has in attracting and motivating people in collective participation, this year UNICEF was pleased to join the Union of Sports of Skopje and their partners “Macedonian Olympic Committee” and “Union of School Sports Skopje” in supporting the Mini Marathon.

“Sports has the power to change children's lives by helping break down barriers, promote participation, alter attitudes and include the excluded,” continued Ms. Erickson. “It contributes to healthy child development; it builds self-esteem and life skills. Above all, sport helps all children, even the poorest and most marginalized, to have fun and enjoy their childhood!”

UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
