Skopje, 13 November 2009: On Monday, 16 November, the Mission of the European Union, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Council of Europe will organise a panel discussion on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), at the EU InfoCentre at 12:00hrs.

At the panel discussion, Dr. Gjorgje Ivanov, President of the State, Mr Erwan Fouéré, EU Special Representative and Head of Delegation of European Commission, Mr Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative, Mr Alain Brian Bergant, Ambassador of the Republic of Slovenia and Chair of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers will address the audience.

A series of events will be organised in honour of the 20th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

To  mark this important milestone, the offices of the European Union Mission, UNICEF and the Council of Europe will discuss the importance of the CRC and the obligations of signatories, as well as  their planned activities to  increase knowledge and awareness of the CRC among young people, civil society, educational, cultural and human rights institutions.

A children's documentary film festival and photo exhibition of photographs illustrating the articles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child will be organised at the EU InfoCentre, between 16 and 20 November. During the week, locally produced films including OneMinutesJr videos produced by children in Skopje on violence in schools and documentaries on Roma girls education will be screened.  The festival also includes films from Israel on inter-ethnic cohesion, from the United States and Kenya on justice for children and from Japan on inclusive education. The first day, which will be hosted by children’s favourite dog “Petko”, is dedicated to articles from the Convention on the Rights of the Child. All screenings are free and followed by an expert led discussion.

The Council of Europe will organise an essay and projects competition "If I were a Magician" among the primary school students in the country. The winners of the competition will be announced at a closing ceremony taking place at the EU InfoCentre on 20 November. Electronic signing of the Council of Europe on-line petition for banning corporal punishment of children will be promoted to visitors to the EU InfoCentre.
