“But I also think it is more important for me at this age to learn than work,”
UNICEF-child friendly space in Hassakeh supports children rights on World Day Against Child Labour
World Day Against Child Labour
We’d like you to meet 13-year-old Shawakh (right), originally from rural Ras Al-Ain in the governorate of Hassakeh in north-eastern #Syria.
Almost 3 years ago, Shawakh and his family were forced to flee their home as violence escalated in their hometown, seeking safety in the nearby village of Tal Halaf.
Years of violence, displacement and inflation have depleted the family’s financial resources, forcing Shawakh to leave school in Grade 4, to work in a motorcycle repair workshop and help his family put bread on the table. His monthly salary of USD 23$ goes towards paying rent and buying food for his family.
“My work is very tiring but I’m getting used to it,” says Shawakh.
I still wish I could go back to school one day, perhaps I can get a degree in engineering and become a professional mechanic!
Every day after work, Shawakh tries to visit the UNICEF-supported child friendly space near his home, where he plays with children his age and engages in recreational and educational activities. His favorite sport is football, and he also likes to draw. At the centre, Shawakh also engages in psychosocial support sessions to help him better cope with his situation. He also learns life skills and participates in discussions on child rights.
“It makes me happy to help my father and support my family,” says Shawakh. “But I also think it is more important for me at this age to learn than work,” he continues.
