Representative, UNICEF Syria
Mr. Equiza began his mission in Syria as UNICEF Representative on July 2017. In his role as Representative he provides strategic and operational leadership of UNICEF Country Office and programme in one of the world’s most complex and protracted crises and advocates for the rights of children in Syria guided by the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Prior to his assignment in Syria, Mr. Equiza was UNICEF Representative to Mali from November 2014 where he led and managed the Country Office for the enhancement of the survival, protection, development and participation of children, youth and women in national development efforts, through a broad range of partnership with the Government, Parliament, civil society and private sector organisations.
Before joining UNICEF, Mr. Equiza served as the Regional Director of OXFAM-GB for the Horn, East and Central Africa region from August 2010 where he had the responsibility of assuring the impact of the programmes both in development and humanitarian action and led the Emergency Response on the Drought on Horn of Africa over three countries. Mr. Equiza also served as Regional Director of OXFAM-GB in Latin America and the Caribbean in Mexico from August 2008 where he defined and implemented the vision, strategy and action plan for the region and led the start of the Emergency Response after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti.
Mr. Equiza holds a Bachelor and master’s degrees of Business Administration from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC) and ESADE, Barcelona, as well as two master’s degrees in Applied Economic Analysis and in Information and Knowledge Society Studies from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, respectively. Mr. Equiza also holds diplomas in Advanced Studies in Human Development and Governance from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and International Institute on Governance in Barcelona as well as in Advanced Studies on Political Science from the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.
Mr. Equiza is the proud father of three children.
