Zika virus supplies

UNICEF is working with partners and industry to transform today’s under-supplied Zika market, which currently offers no point of care (POC) or rapid diagnostic test (RDT) and no vaccine. UNICEF’s collaboration with WHO and  the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) focuses on implementing an R&D blueprint on innovation and fit-for-purpose products. UNICEF is also working with partners to develop an advance purchase commitment (APC), which aims to reduce demand uncertainty risks for manufacturers who invest R&D towards new products.

ZIKV diagnostics Request for Proposal launched; $10 million Advance Purchase Commitment created - 28 February 2017
UNICEF has launched a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the supply of Zika virus (ZIKV) diagnostics for testing at point-of-care (POC) during 2017 through 2019. The goal of the RFP is to ensure access and availability of quality assured, diagnostic testing by supporting the accelerated development of novel devices. The successful development of affordable products will help create a healthy and sustainable market for these types of tests. 

UNICEF Zika Diagnostics Webinar : presentations and Q&A – 30 August  2016
UNICEF convened ZIKV Diagnostics webinar which took place on 30th August at 15:00 CET. The webinar was a follow-up on the industry consultation hosted by UNICEF Supply Division, in Copenhagen 11-12th May earlier this year to  update industry and partners on current developments, revised demand profiles, including UNICEF procurement approach and timelines for Zika diagnostics tender.

Target Product Profile (TPP)  for Better Zika Diagnostic test - May 2016
Developed by UNICEF, WHO and PAHO, this TPP specifies characteristics for optimal Zika diagnostic tests to guide the development of products currently unavailable on the market.
