UNICEF Industry Consultation on Personal Protective Equipment needs in Ebola response

November 11-12 2014:  UNICEF convened a global consultation with the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) industry to provide global forecasts and advocate for sufficient global supply. Over 15 manufacturers representing the vast majority of global production capacity will be present, as well as key partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), Medecins sans frontieres (MSF), representatives of the UK and US governments, and others.

The consultation represented a milestone in information-sharing on PPE requirements and supply chains that have been established by major buyers.   It is the first of an ongoing process in which the next step will be to consolidate and update quantification of demand across procurement partners, update specifications, and a establish knowledge sharing platform. The priority now is for industry to increase production and for partners to work together to propose ways to support suppliers in this effort, including implementing financing mechanisms that will take into consideration the investments that will be needed to effect scale-up.
