Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC)

UNICEF provides an information note on the seasonal malaria chemotherapy (SMC) and highlights demand forecasts, supply shortages and product constraint availability. SMC is used as a preventative malaria treatment targeting children between 3 and 59 months during the high malaria transmission season in the Sahel sub-region of sub-Saharan Africa. The scale up of SMC programmes is largely constrained by limited sources of quality-assured medicines, and currently dependent on one global manufacturer. UNICEF and partners seek to increase supply availability of quality assured SMC. UNICEF will establish long-term arrangements covering the period 2018-2020 upon concluding its upcoming tender.
