UNICEF has operated in Sudan since 1952. UNICEF’s first permanent office opened in Khartoum in 1974. UNICEF's developmental and humanitarian work is implemented by six field offices located in Damazine (covering the States of Blue Nile, Sennar and White Nile); El Fasher (covering the State of North Darfur); El Geneina (covering the States of Central Darfur and West Darfur); Kadugli (covering the States of North Kordofan, South Kordofan, West Kordofan and Abyei), Kassala (covering the States of Gedaref, Kassala and Red Sea); and, Nyala (covering the States of East Darfur and South Darfur). The UNICEF Field Operations function through these six field offices, with sub-offices located in Ed Dain, El Fula, Kosti, Port Sudan, and Zalengei. The work in Abyei, Gedaref, North Kordofan and Sennar is covered by regular field missions from the field offices.
