UNICEF Sudan Youth Advocate
Name: Makhtoum Abdalla
Location: Nyala, South Darfur, Sudan
Areas of focus: Education, Child Rights, Increased Investment in Youth and IDPs
Makhtoum is passionate about equal access to quality education for all children and young people. The 17-year-old from Nyala, South Darfur in the western part of Sudan, believes investment in education is strategic for any country that wishes to progress.
While growing up in a camp for Internally Displaced People, he continues to raise awareness on education, child rights, improvement in health services, and investments in young people.
As a UNICEF Youth Advocate, Makhtoum will use his voice to inspire other young people to strive towards their goals, learn and reimagine a brighter future. He taught himself English, Turkish and currently French and Spanish. His dream is to become a doctor to not only heal people, but to ensure the healthcare system advances, and equal access to good healthcare.
“Education can take us from the darkness to light,” said Makhtoum. “I’m over the moon to be a Youth Advocate. When I was born, I faced countless problems, but I didn’t stop dreaming for big things. Nothing will change unless you change.”
