Nutrition
Annual Report 2021

Highlights
Highlights
This report provides a comprehensive overview of UNICEF Sudan’s nutrition activities and results in 2021.
In the past 30 years, malnutrition rates have not improved in Sudan, and worse still, the number of children who are stunted and wasted has actually increased since 1987, especially in Sudan’s conflict-ridden Darfur region as well as the eastern states. Sudan has one of the largest numbers of malnourished children in the world. A striking three million children under-five suffer from malnutrition, of which more than half a million from severe acute malnutrition. Without treatment these children are at risk of severe illness, developmental delays and death.
Despite the challenging operational environment, UNICEF screened millions of children for malnutrition and reached children suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) with therapeutic food and care, even in hard-to-reach areas.
