Thematic funding for safe and healthy environments aims to achieve: ‘Sustained use of safe water and sanitation services and adoption of hygiene practices and strengthened systems for a clean and safe environment for all children, women, girls and boys, particularly the most disadvantaged and those affected by humanitarian situations’. The activities implemented predominantly cover access to water and sanitation services in communities, schools and health centres both developmental and humanitarian settings. It also includes activities aimed at strengthening climate resilience and supporting climate adaptation.
Given that 72 per cent of the Sudanese population are under 24 years of age, getting things right for children, adolescents and youth in the immediate and longer term, will to a great degree determine how successful Sudan will be in the future. This includes attention to the issues related to the environment and climate. Durable solutions and innovations are needed to provide clean and healthy environments for generations to come. UNICEF will continue to provide sustainable water and sanitation services for the people of Sudan, in addition to scaling-up the use of solar-technology in its education, health and WASH programmes.
