UNICEF calls on all Sri Lankans to show solidarity with the victims of the Philippines Typhoon

COLOMBO, 12 November 2013—United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Sri Lanka expresses its concern for children and families affected by Super Typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) and calls on all Sri Lankans to show their solidarity with the children and families who have suffered from the disaster. The disaster has affected an estimated 9.8 million people. At least half of them are children.


New UNICEF Representative for Sri Lanka

Colombo, Sri Lanka, 11th October 2013. Ms. Una McCauley has assumed office as the new representative for UNICEF in Sri Lanka. Ms. McCauley presented her credentials to the Minister of External Affairs, Hon. G. L. Peiris on the 11th of October.

Invest in Early Childhood says UNICEF

Colombo, 3rd August 2013 – A UNICEF-funded  research report on Early Childhood Development (ECD) was launched today by Hon. Minister of Health, Maithripala Sirisena, at a ceremony in Colombo.  The report will help to lay the foundation for strong ECD programming across all sectors in the country by providing guidance to parents and caregivers on proper care practices and key development benchmarks for Sri Lankan children below the age of five.


Strong gains in exclusive breast-feeding must be sustained, says UNICEF
August 1, 2013: On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week, UNICEF called on government and industry to ensure that the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes continues to be strongly enforced. Sri Lanka was one of the first countries in the world to adopt this Code in 1981. The Code protects and promotes breastfeeding, through the provision of adequate information on appropriate infant feeding and the regulation of the marketing of breast milk substitutes.

Sri Lanka Seeks Solutions for the Last Vulnerable Children to Complete their EducationAt a workshop dedicated to finding solutions for school drop-outs, the Ministry of Education, UNICEF and UNESCO Institute for  Statistics (UIS) unveiled a joint study on Out of School Children made possible by support from AusAID. The study is part of a global initiative conducted by UNICEF and UIS, to investigate where, how many and why children are out of school or at risk of dropping out. The study looks at barriers and bottlenecks to enrollment and identifies measures that can lead to the inclusion of these children.

UNICEF Organizes forum to promote the rights of children with disabilities

At an event dedicated to highlighting the state of children with disabilities in Sri Lanka and the world, UNICEF’s Regional Director for South Asia, Karin Hulshof launched a report that lays out current challenges as well as the way forward for creating inclusive societies for children with disabilities. “If we want to achieve the MDGs; if we want a world with equity, then we need to address issues around children with disabilities,” said Hulshof at the launch event.

UNICEF Commends Sri Lanka for putting children at the center of multi-sectoral policy discussion on quality pre-school and primary education

At the end of last week, Presidential Secretaria and UNICEF jointly organized a two day workshop that brought together a cross section of policy makers from across the country to examine challenges in implementing quality pre-school and "child friendly" education in Sri Lanka.
